Netgear Orbis are acting weird, the issue is the firmware running on the equipment.

Since mid-February we have seen folks with Netgear Orbis have strange speed test results. On the gig plan, they are getting around 500mbit download, 940mbit upload. We determined this is a dynamic quality of service (QOS) event which is limiting the peak usage for a single device (including the router’s built in speed test client) to 500mbit. On the gig plan, it appears to a single device that you cannot pull the full gig speed. However, with multiple devices, you can use over 500mbit on the gig plan.

This is a common problem that is reported in the Orbi user community. Since the total throughput can hit the full gigabit, it isn’t really a “defect”; rather it ensures fair play in your home.

We have gone to multiple homes and tested/confirmed the full 940/940 download/upload using our dedicated speed test appliance.
