Your Internet was likely slow and having trouble yesterday. It wasn't us or KPUD.

What’s up with the internet yesterday? Common websites were not loading, Netflix was having trouble with their content. Heck, I couldn’t buy that electronic fly zapper / combo egg beater off e-bay with Paypal.

A company called “Fastly” delivers content to the edge of the internet. This is how massive data gets distributed. If you imagine you connect to Netflix to watch a show, the whole world doesn’t connect to a single computer, not even a single data center (massive building full of computers). Content delivery networks (CDNs) are a “shim” in between the original content creator and the end users. CDNs replicate content and store it geographically close to the consumers to minimize the bandwidth/mileage requirements to move data. Real bandwidth is expensive, so much so that it is cheaper to build buildings than buy more bits.

Anyhoo - Fastly was slowly yesterday, they got their CDN wheels all rolling in the same direction around 2AM on June 8th.

As a net253 subscriber, I noticed it yesterday and looked into it. It was not us.

According to the actual scrum board for Fastly, everything wasn’t fully repaired till 2AM, however they had much recovered within a few hours. Imagine being the support guy who got the call “Hey, you just broke Amazon.com”. I wouldn’t want that call.
