KPUD doing equipment upgrades (Pouslbo)
KPUD is replacing some large residential distribution switches with multiple, smaller switches. Why? The smaller switches are “hardened” and have been proven better in the field over the last few years. The big monster switches looked great on paper but the performance and ongoing licensing fees (thousands of dollars per year per switch) simply make no sense for residential service.
KPUD is working through the whole county getting the old monster switches out.
Up next are East Poulsbo cabinets on 8/12 (Mountain Aire), 8/16 (Lookout Lane), 8/24 (Summerset). In all three cases KPUD will be replacing the networking gear in the cabinet. If you are in these areas your service will be down between 9am and 3pm. Likely for hours. It doesn’t matter which ISP you have; when they pull the power cord on the switch, all ISPs will go offline.
Why during business hours on during the week? They cannot pay overtime for the labor and it really needs to be during daylight hours due to the amount of “cabling” involved. I get it; trying to reroute hundreds of fiber optic patch panels in the dark of night is really no fun.
Please be patient as KPUD works to improve your service.
