New Gig customer, myself
OK, its been almost a year into this pandemic. Guess what? Our Comcast hasn’t been good enough. I have two sons trying to do distance learning, and the cable service was so bad that the Zoom sessions kept dropping. My youngest was literally in tears due to his teachers dinging him for dropping off the classes. We watched it happen. We are now less than 2 weeks away from being Net253 fiber customers. Am I going for the gig? Hell yes. I know I would be totally fine with 100mb, but as one of my customers pointed out to me, it’s not that much more, and its so much faster that speed just becomes a non issue. I am used to gig service at the office. Yes, it slows down occasionally, but that is due to things like Amazon, Google, CloudFlare, Microsoft, Oracle, or Akami having a bad day.
So yes, I will coach you to start with 100 and move up if you really need it. But do I listen to myself? Nahh. Bring it on!
Edit 2/9 - Well we are online with a gig. Guess what? My old Cisco enterprise router that has been my trusty network hub for the last 8 years can’t handle a gig. It tops out at 250mbs. When I plug straight in I get the full speed. Just goes to show that the last thirty feet inside the home is one of the largest variables in how internet performs. Guess I need to upgrade my own networking gear!
