Be patient when you order service

KPUD operates an “Open Access” network. The Public Utility District owns and operates the physical fiber and switching equipment that interconnects homes and businesses (and cell towers and 911 call center) in Kitsap County. For the internet service (why you are reading this), KPUD opens their network to multiple service providers to compete for business.

Some service providers use aggressive techniques to win customers and it works. One provider offers rates that are below market rate. The rates are so low that other providers cannot compete at that price point due to the cost of getting your service transited out of Kitsap County. Several offer free installation, whereas the two largest providers that have been doing this the longest in Kitsap still charge for their professional services.

With new service installation, all ISPs are required by KPUD to wait for an “activation notice” before completing the installation. Sometimes KPUD has a delay for logistical or staffing issues.

If you do choose to go with another provider, please make sure you have some sort of “order form” that you fill out so that you are the one signing up for service. On the day of installation, there are a mryiad of reasons why a delay could occur, many outside the ISP’s control. Please resist the urge to call another provider to “come out same day and get you online”. I can assure you that by making that call you will only delay your service till the next day at the earliest, possibly next week if this happens on a Friday.
